Robot Olympic repair crews are training across western Serbia for Surčin 2046. The fastest hands may never touch the finish line.

SURČIN, 2046 — Specialist teams for rapid robot repair have entered the final phase of preparation for the Robot Olympic Games, which open next month at the Surčin Autonomous Athletics Complex.

Serbia’s service crews are training in factories in Šabac, Loznica and Majur, where conditions are considered unusually favourable: long production halls, disciplined shifts and a quantity of cordless screwdrivers rarely available to the sporting public.

The athletes will run, jump and attempt to remain upright. The technicians will compete in the more realistic part of the programme: putting them back together.

The events behind the events

The official service disciplines include the two-handed screwdriver, rapid limb replacement, battery replacement while wearing insulated gloves and emergency fire suppression. Sensor operators will compete separately, refining their technique with the latest cotton lint-free cloths from Arilje.

Judges will assess speed, accuracy and the number of components left on the floor after the robot has returned to competition. A machine may cross the service line without its original arm, but it must cross with the same legal identity, firmware certificate and number of load-bearing limbs with which it entered.

The regulations are strict because the repair crew is the only team whose best performance is never supposed to become visible. When it succeeds, the robot simply continues. When it fails, an international audience learns the precise location of the emergency stop.

Oh, Shit—Stop!

For the first time, Serbia is also hosting Oh, Shit—Stop! crews from fourteen countries. The name began as a sentence shouted during an early qualifying accident and was later retained because every proposed rebrand sounded less honest.

The format resembles a pit stop, except that the vehicle can ask what happened, disagree with the diagnosis and occasionally attempt to leave before both feet have been installed.

One mechanic approaches from the left. Another reaches the same joint from the right. A third confirms that the battery is isolated. The robot says it feels fine. Nobody believes it. The clock continues.

Organisers chose western Serbia for the training camp because local factories can reproduce almost every form of pressure expected in Surčin: heat, noise, compressed schedules, missing adapters and a supervisor asking whether the machine can finish the shift first.

A new factory has also been announced to produce landing mats for the cushioned reception of competitors after a race, with minimal stress on the components of humanoid runners. The factory will produce the already legendary Robotizer mat, with three layers of different density and different rates of absorption of excess kinetic energy from the competitors’ bodies.

Their design pays particular attention to ensuring that robot bodies and sensors are not scratched, but are even cleaned and polished by friction, because the mat surface is covered in uncombed cyber-cotton from Arilje. This year the people of Arilje also have their own support team on the ground, supporting all participants.

Pirelli still leads, although this year Michelin, Tigar and Continental have released fantastic covers with summer tread patterns. All have also paid special attention to aquaplaning, so that competitors do not slip because of rain, as they did at the previous Olympics in New Delhi in 2042.

Tyre manufacturers believe that this Olympics will be revolutionary for the robo-sole market and are considering creating a joint rating system for places where technicians eat. The ratings would be + or −.

That is: good or no good.

The favourites

The home crowd is already gathering around Dragutin, Serbia’s leading humanoid over 100 metres. He is fast, polite and has completed three consecutive starts without asking to install an update.

Milutin will compete in endurance, where he will attempt to improve his national record for making it all the way to the end. The federation has declined to specify the distance, arguing that the achievement is philosophical as well as athletic.

The international field includes Husenoid Bolt, whose spelling survived every editorial intervention because a humanoid is not a pronunciation setting. For Spanish-language broadcasts he is registered under his full competitive name, Jusein R. Bot.

Jusein R. Bot remains world champion in preserving structural integrity on tracks up to exactly 116.43 metres. Beyond that distance, responsibility formally passes to the Oh, Shit—Stop! crew.

What the crowd does not see

Robot sport is often presented as a contest between machines. In practice, every clean lap is a temporary agreement among designers, operators, mechanics, batteries, floors, rules and the person holding the cloth.

The athlete receives the medal. The service team receives the robot five minutes before the next event.

That is why the loudest cheer in Surčin may not follow the fastest finish. It may come from a quiet service bay after somebody reconnects one cable, closes one panel and says the two most human words in engineering:
